WTF Is ESG? (And Why Every Woman Investor Should Know)

You’ve probably seen the acronym floating around. It’s buzzy, it’s trending, and it shows up on investment platforms and corporate reports alike. But what does it actually mean? And more importantly, should you care?

If you’re a woman building a business, a legacy, or a more values-aligned financial life, the answer is: yes.

Let’s break it down, as always, bullsh*t and jargon-free.

Soo… WTF is ESG?

ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. These are three categories used to evaluate how companies operate beyond just the profits.

Environmental

How does a company impact the planet?
Think: climate policies, emissions, renewable energy use, water, and waste management.

Social

How does it treat people inside (and outside) the company?
This includes employee rights, labor practices, diversity and inclusion, community engagement, and human rights in the supply chain.

Governance

How is the company run?
We look at board diversity, executive pay, transparency, and how ethically decisions are made.

In short, ESG helps you see whether a company is not only talking the talk, but walking the walk, especially when it comes to sustainability, equity, and ethics.

Okay, But What Is ESG Investing?

ESG investing means choosing companies or funds that meet certain standards in these three areas.

You’re still investing to grow your wealth. But you’re also asking:
Is this company doing harm, or doing better?

And when you build a portfolio with ESG in mind, you’re putting your money where your values are. You’re also making sure you don’t inadvertently invest somewhere that is not aligned with your ethics or morals.

Why ESG Matters (Especially for Women)

Many women aren’t just looking to grow wealth, we want to make a positive impact while doing it.

ESG investing can:

  • Align your investments with your values
  • Reduce long-term risk (companies with strong ESG practices are often more resilient)
  • Support issues that matter to you like climate action, gender equity, or ethical governance
  • Help you feel more connected to your financial life

But Wait, What About Greenwashing?

It’s true. Not every ESG fund is truly values-aligned. Some companies slap a green label on the front, while still investing in fossil fuels, labor violations, or unethical leadership. This is called greenwashing, and it’s unfortunately frustratingly common.

That’s why it helps to:

  • Look under the hood of ESG-labeled ETFs and funds
  • Work with an advisor (hi!) who understands the nuances
  • Ask yourself: Is this fund actually doing what it says it’s doing?

ESG Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

One of the biggest myths is that ESG is a set formula. In truth, it’s a framework, and your approach can be as customized and unique as your values.

Maybe you care most about climate impact. Or gender equity. Or ethical supply chains. ESG allows you to prioritize what matters most to you while still investing with strategy.

Profit and Purpose Can Coexist

You don’t have to choose between growing wealth and doing good. ESG investing is a way to pursue both while staying aligned with who you are and what you stand for.
